Introduction:

In the latest episode of the Plant Orlando podcast, Felipe Echeverri shares his transformative journey from a secular upbringing in Colombia to becoming a passionate church planter in Central Florida. His story is one of resilience, faith, and the unwavering call to serve a greater purpose through the gospel.

Early Life and Spiritual Awakening

Felipe's story begins in Bogotá, Colombia, where he was raised in a home that had initially embraced Christianity. However, after a negative experience at church, his family stepped away from their faith, leading to a significant void in Felipe's spiritual life from ages five to fifteen. During his teenage years, he grappled with profound existential questions that many young people face, such as "Where do I come from?" and "What is my purpose?"

In a moment of seeking answers, Felipe turned to his grandmother, a spiritually curious woman. Despite her eclectic beliefs, she pointed him to Jesus, stating, "If you want answers, follow Jesus." This pivotal advice set Felipe on a path of rediscovery that would change the trajectory of his life.

Finding Faith in a New Community

At 15, Felipe finally stepped back into a church, where he met a pastor who profoundly impacted his faith journey. This pastor's dynamic preaching resonated with Felipe, leading him to accept Jesus Christ. The church became a nurturing ground for Felipe, where he not only grew spiritually but also met his future wife, Catalina. Together, they navigated the challenges of young parenthood and early marriage while nurturing their faith.

The Call to Ministry

Felipe's journey into ministry was not without its challenges. After experiencing rejection from a church community due to personal circumstances, he faced feelings of resentment but eventually felt God’s call to serve. His involvement in church leadership gradually evolved, leading him to preach and mentor others. A significant moment came while working as an advertising manager at General Motors, where a vice president's words ignited a realization in Felipe: he had lost passion for his job. This pivotal moment prompted him to speak with his pastor, ultimately leading to a transition into full-time ministry.

The Reality of Church Life

Transitioning from the corporate world to church leadership came with its own set of realities. Felipe humorously recalls the misconception that working at a church would be like a perpetual Sunday service. Instead, he encountered the messy realities of church life, acknowledging that churches are complex environments filled with both joy and challenges. After three and a half years, Felipe chose to return to the marketplace, seeking balance and healing.

Planting a New Church

The desire to serve never left Felipe. After a period away from church leadership, he initiated a Bible study in his home, which rapidly grew from a few families to over 350 attendees. This experience culminated in the establishment of a thriving church named Viva in Bogotá. However, the pandemic prompted a move to Miami, where Felipe faced new challenges in a different church environment. After a difficult transition, he relocated to Orlando in 2022 to plant another church, continuing his mission to spread the gospel.

A Time for Healing

In 2022, Felipe recognized the need for a sabbatical to heal from personal and ministry-related wounds. This year-and-a-half period allowed him to address unresolved issues, restore relationships, and prepare for the next chapter of his ministry. Felipe emphasizes the importance of taking time for self-care and healing, especially for those in ministry.

Conclusion:

Felipe Echeverri's journey is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the importance of community in the Christian walk. His story serves as an inspiration for anyone navigating their own spiritual journey, reminding us that God often works through our struggles to lead us to our purpose. Key takeaways include the significance of mentorship, the reality of church life, and the vital need for personal healing in ministry.
